The Odessa opera and ballet house was designed by famous Viennese architects F. Felner and G. Gelmer. These talented architects were also in charge of other 48 theatre projects all around the world including the ones in Prague, Berlin, Vienna, Warsaw, Saltsburg and Budapest. Odessa opera and ballet house together with opera houses in Paris and Vienna are recognized as one of the most remarkable examples of architectural art in the world.
The interior of the theatre amazes with its aesthetics and beauty. The five-tiered auditorium is richly ornamented – the gold-plated decoration of the interior covers the area of 400 sq. m. and boasts the value of 12 kg of pure gold. The paintings on the ceiling, produced by the Viennese painter Lefler, depict the heroes of Shakespeare’s works. The chandelier weighting 2 200 kg that hangs in the middle of the main hall is a masterpiece in itself. The stage, which covers the area of impressive 500 sq. m., is fitted with the most modern equipment, which allows the demonstration of the most technically demanding performances. The royal staircase in the hallway leads to a huge gold-plated mirror, behind which a program of the first premier of 1887 is preserved.
The troupe of the Odessa’s opera house has achieved worldwide recognition regularly performing at the most renowned venues in the world such as La Scala in Milan and Grand Opera in Paris.
