The mysterious Object 1 so-called “Stalin Metro” or South Tube used to be a special secret construction of the USSR. These are two underground tunnels under the Dnieper River in Kyiv built in case the city’s bridges got blown up during the war. Stalin initiated it in 1936 to strengthen the fortification system of the city. For the construction of the object up to 12000 workers were involved.
After the German troops approached Kiev the works were stopped there. In a hurry unfinished tunnels were submerged and some equipment was covered up with soil. Another part of the techniques, materials, etc together with the personnel and workers were evacuated.
The evidence of magnificent construction can be found on both banks of the Dnieper River and in the Obolon district of Kyiv.
