Vilkovo - the pearl of pre-Danube lows – Ukrainian Venice – is situated at the point where Danube meets the Black Sea, on the border with Romania, 227 km from Odessa. The town, which occupies the area of 1100 acres and is home to 10 thousand habitants, is unique as it stands on the water. Man has artificially built up the land that supports the buildings of the town. Instead of the ordinary street roads the blocks of the old part of town are separated by the water channels, which occupy 45% of total area of the town. The only transport here is boats. It is hard to believe that this previously inaccessible and uninhabitable land is now home to the whole town full of houses, orchards and vineyards. The history of Vilkovo goes back to the XVII century when the split of the Orthodox Church took place. The dissenters fled to these hardly accessible, uninhabited, swampy lands. Later they were joined by Don Cossacks, and after the destruction of the Zaporozhian Sich (1775), Zaporozhian Cossacks settled here.

After the excursion around the town, which has only four streets lying on the mainland you will have an opportunity to make a trip on the comfortable boat to the delta of Danube visiting natural reserve with its diverse flora and fauna. This area is inhabited by more than 240 different bird species (pink pelicans, brants, herons, eagles and others), including some very rare protected kinds. On the sea coast at the border of Danube and Black Sea you will see 0 km sign, which symbolizes the end of the mighty Danube and beginning the vast Black Sea.
